HBO will debut a filmed version of “Just for Us” in April. The film features a live capture of the play, written and performed by comedian Alex Edelman, which was recorded on Aug. 16 and 17, 2023, during its run at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre

Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, who was a creative consultant on the Broadway production, served as director of the live capture. A specific date of the release will be announced.

“Alex is a truly brilliant writer and storyteller,” said Nina Rosenstein, executive vice president, HBO programming, late night and specials, in a statement. “‘Just for Us’ is a thought-provoking and powerful show that stays with you long after you see it, and we’re thrilled to bring it to our audience.”

“Just for Us” follows Edelman’s real-life attendance at a Queens white supremacist gathering in response to receiving online anti-Semitic threats and rhetoric.

“You know, when I was in high school, I saw John Updike give a talk and he said, ‘If you’re lucky, the work that you write might at some point find itself in conversation with the times in which you live,’” Edelman said in a statement. “And, well, call me Mr. Lucky.”

Directed on the Main Stem by the late Adam Brace, the solo play opened on Broadway on June 26, 2023, and completed a limited run on Aug. 19. A subsequent national tour launched on Oct. 26 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. Following an upcoming one-night return to New York City on March 14 at the Beacon Theatre, the tour will conclude on March 31 at Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum.

“Just for Us” on HBO is being executive-produced by Edelman, Timbers, Mike Birbiglia and Above Average’s Marc Lieberman and Ally Engelberg.
