Lincoln Center Theater announced Thursday the launch of a play commission program for its Broadway theater.
The Beaumont New Play Commission Program will begin with works by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Lynn Nottage and Marco Ramirez created specifically for the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Additional writers will be announced at a later date.
“I believe that we are in a golden age of American playwrighting and Branden, Lynn and Marco are three of the finest writers at work today,” said André Bishop, producing artistic director of Lincoln Center Theater. “We can think of no better way to inaugurate this program than to engage these three artists to use their imagination, creativity and passion to create new works for the Beaumont stage.”
While Lincoln Center Theater has a longstanding commission program, this is the first program aimed specifically at works created for its Broadway house.
Lincoln Center Theater has previously produced works by the three playwrights, including the LCT3 production of Jacobs-Jenkins “War” and Ramirez’s “The Royale” at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. “Intimate Apparel,” which features a libretto by Nottage, was postponed due to COVID-19 and is scheduled to resume performances in the spring.
Other playwrights currently commissioned at Lincoln Center Theater include Christina Anderson, Sarah DeLappe, Christopher Durang, John Guare, Miranda Rose Hall, Jeremy O. Harris, Phillip Howze, Quiara Alegría Hudes, Michael R. Jackson, Sarah Jones, Steven Karam, Sylvia Khoury, Young Jean Lee, Taylor Mac, Aasif Mandvi, Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen, Dominique Morisseau, Itamar Moses, Max Posner, Caitlin Saylor Stephens and Bryna Turner.
