Lin-Manuel Miranda and Steven Levenson are teaming up again to executive produce a limited television series about the romantic and business partnership between Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon.
Miranda and Levenson, who recently announced their collaboration on a movie adaptation of “Tick, Tick…Boom!”, will produce the eight-episode series for FX, along with Miranda’s longtime collaborator Thomas Kail and television producer George Stelzner. Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams have been tapped to star in the series.
“Bob Fosse ignited a revolution in American dance, theater, and film. But, in contrast to the well-worn myth of the visionary artist working in solitude, Fosse’s work would not have been possible without Gwen Verdon, the woman who helped to mold his style – and make him a star. We are honored to work with the incredible team at FX and Fox 21, and these two extraordinary actors, to tell the story of this remarkable couple, and the complicated, fascinating relationship between them,” Kail, Levenson and Miranda said in the press release.
The show will feature Fosse’s choreography, which will be overseen by “Hamilton’s” Andy Blankenbuehler. Nicole Fosse, the daughter of Fosse and Verdon, will act as co-executive producer.
The series is based on the biography, “Fosse,” written by Sam Wasson, and will follow tribulations and successes of Fosse, as a genre-defining choreographer and filmmaker, and of Verdon, as a premiere Broadway dancer.
Levenson wrote the first episode, which will be directed by Kail, and will be acting at show runner.
Production is scheduled to begin in the fall, with the series debut scheduled for 2019.
