The Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) has announced Miami University’s Lauren Lewis and Minh Nguyen as the winners of its 2024 College Green Captain Award. The duo were cited for their environmentally conscious design, construction and strike of their production of “Puffs,” which ran from May 1 to May 5 at the campus’ Gates-Abegglen Theatre in Oxford, Ohio.
The BGA educates, motivates and inspires individuals in the Broadway industry to discover and commit to more environmentally friendly practices across all disciplines of theater. The BGA’s college green captain program provides resources and assistance for university-level theater programs that hope to make the smallest environmental footprint possible while still mounting a production. The program’s annual award includes two tickets to a Broadway show in New York City or a national tour, as well as a virtual meet-and-greet with a BGA captain currently working on the Main Stem.
“Receiving this award has inspired me to continue this important, planet-saving work,” said Lewis, who graduated in May with dual degrees in theater as well as arts management and entrepreneurship.”
Nguyen — a May graduate with degrees in theater, arts management and entrepreneurship and east Asian languages and cultures — added, “This recognition from the BGA is a powerful reminder that every small action counts, and I’m deeply thankful for it. I hope it will inspire my peers at Miami University to join us as College Green Captains and take new initiatives to embrace eco-friendly practices. As I learn and grow, I’m thrilled to see a community coming together to work towards a more sustainable future for theater.”
Over one hundred colleges and universities currently comprise the BGA’s green captain program. Austin Sora is the program director. The BGA is an ad hoc committee of the Broadway League.
