Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of “Lackawanna Blues” will begin Broadway performances Sept. 14.
The play, which is written, performed and directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, will open at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre Sept. 28. “Lackawanna Blues” joins “Hamilton,” “Wicked,” “The Lion King” and “Chicago” in starting performances the first day Broadway is allowed to reopen at full capacity under current guidelines.
General ticket sales begin Aug. 10.
Manhattan Theatre Club’s Off-Broadway production of “Morning Sun” by Simon Stephens will begin performances at New York City Center – Stage I on Oct. 12 and open Nov. 3. The world premiere of the production will star Blair Brown, Edie Falco and Marin Ireland. Lila Neugebauer will direct.
Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2021-2022 Broadway season will also include Dominique Morisseau’s “Skeleton Crew,” which Santiago-Hudson will direct, in winter 2022 and the postponed production of Paula Vogel’s “How I Learned to Drive” in spring 2022. Exact dates for the two productions have not yet been announced.
In spring 2022, Manhattan Theatre Club will also produce Anchuli Felicia King’s “Golden Shield,” which will be directed by Danya Taymor.
Safety protocols for the productions have not yet been announced, but Manhattan Theatre Club said it will follow guidance from the state and the Centers for Disease Control upon reopening.
Like its fellow nonprofit, Roundabout Theatre Company, Manhattan Theatre Club also pointed to an anti-racism plan and a progress report on its efforts as of Jan. 2021 as part of its reopening announcement.
