LaChanze will star in Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of “Trouble in Mind” this fall.

The play, written by Alice Childress and directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, is scheduled to begin preview performances at the American Airlines Theatre Oct. 29 and open Nov. 18. LaChanze comes to the role after recently starring in “A Christmas Carol” and “Summer” on Broadway.

“Trouble in Mind” originally premiered Off-Broadway in 1955. LaChanze, a Tony Award winner for “The Color Purple” and the original Ti Moune in “Once on This Island,” will play the central character of Wiletta, a Black actress in rehearsals for a Broadway production as she examines racism and ego in the theater world.

Additional cast members will be announced at a later date. The limited engagement runs through Jan. 9.

The design team on “Trouble in Mind” includes set designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Emilio Sosa, lighting designer Kathy A. Perkins and sound designer Dan Moses Schreier. Nona Hendryx is providing original music for the production.
