“Kimberly Akimbo” will play the Booth Theatre when it transfers to Broadway this fall, producers revealed Friday.
The announcement comes as the show has set its exclusive fan presale, which begins May 31.
The new musical, which premiered Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company this season, is set to begin previews Oct. 12 and open officially on Nov. 10. As previously announced, the cast from the premiere production will follow the show to its Broadway run, including Victoria Clark (“The Light in the Piazza”), Bonnie Milligan (“Head Over Heels”) and Justin Cooley (making his Broadway debut).
The Booth Theatre currently serves as the venue for the revival of “for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf,” which is currently scheduled to close June 5.
Also joining for the Broadway transfer of “Kimberly Akimbo” are the majority of the Off-Broadway creative team, including set designer David Zinn, costume designer Sarah Laux and sound designer Kai Harada. Lighting designer Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew joins the roster for the Broadway run.
The Atlantic Theater Company production has been the recipient of several top musical awards this season, including the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, Outer Critics’ Circle Awards and Lucille Lortel Award. It is nominated for nine Drama Desk Awards and three Drama League Awards.
“Kimberly Akimbo” features a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and a score by Jeanine Tesori, and will be directed by Jessica Stone with choreography by Danny Mefford. The musical is produced by David Stone, Atlantic Theater Company, James L. Nederlander, LaChanze, John Gore, Patrick Catullo and Aaron Glick.
