A number of theater veterans were honored with Screen Actors Guild Awards for their film and television achievements on Feb. 23. Screen star Kristen Bell, a Broadway alum who made her debut in 2001’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” hosted the SAG Awards ceremony, which was held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles and streamed live on Netflix.
Among this year’s SAG winners was Kieran Culkin, who took home the award as Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his turn as Benji Kaplan in “A Real Pain.” Culkin, previously seen on Broadway as Dennis Ziegler in “This Is Our Youth,” will return to the Main Stem next month as Richard Roma in a revival of “Glengarry Glen Ross.”
Martin Short, a Tony Award winner for his turn in the 1998 revival of “Little Me,” took home the SAG Award as Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Oliver Putnam in “Only Murders in the Building.” In addition to Short’s win, his castmates were inclusively honored with the prize of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Jean Smart, a Broadway alum last seen on the New York stage in a Tony-nominated turn as Lorraine Sheldon in 2001’s “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” won the SAG Award as Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her turn as Deborah Vance in “Hacks.”
Timothée Chalamet, who burst onto the stage scene in 2016 with a Lucille Lortel Award-winning turn as Jim Rogan in Off-Broadway’s “Prodigal Son,” was also honored with a SAG Award. Chalamet won in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for playing music icon Bob Dylan in the biopic “A Complete Unknown.”
The original movie musical “Emilia Pérez” received a hat-tip with an award for Zoe Saldaña, winning as Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance as Rita.
Jane Fonda, a Broadway veteran whose credits include Tony-nominated performances in 1960’s “There Was a Little Girl” and 2009’s “33 Variations,” was honored by the Screen Actors Guild with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
While the movie adaptation of the long-running Broadway hit “Wicked” was nominated in five categories, the cinema box office record-breaker went home from the SAG Awards empty-handed.
But the film awards season isn’t over just yet. The above talents and a slew of others will compete next week at the Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2.
