June Squibb, an Academy Award nominee for “Nebraska,” is joining the Broadway cast of “Waitress” in the role of “Josie,” which was formerly the role of “Joe.”
The producers of “Waitress” are changing the gender of the musical’s dinner owner “Joe,” who sings the solo number “Take It From an Old Man,” for Squibb who will play the role from Nov. 19 through Jan. 6. Squibb takes over the role from Al Roker.
Nicolette Robinson, who plays Jenna, will stay on through Dec. 9.
Waitress is produced by Barry and Fran Weissler and Norton and Elayne Herrick.
Squibb will be returning to Broadway after a 57 year absence, including her role as Electra, one of the stripper’s in “Gypsy” starring Ethel Merman, and roles in “The Happy Times,” “Gorey Stories” and “Sacrilege.”
In addition to her Broadway credits, Squibb has appeared in numerous films and television shows including “About Schmidt,” “Love the Coopers,” “Modern Family” and “Jack and Triumph.”
