Producer Jeffrey Seller has announced that a revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will open at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in spring of 2023. Directed by Thomas Kail, the Sondheim musical will begin performances on February 26 and open on March 26.
With music supervision by Alex Lacamoire, the production will feature the “Sweeney” score as it was performed in its first Broadway staging, with Jonathan Tunick’s original 26-player orchestration. “Sweeney Todd” features a book by Hugh Wheeler and a score by Stephen Sondheim.
The creative team for the “Sweeney Todd” revival will also include choreographer Steven Hoggett, set designer Mimi Lien, costume designer Emilio Sosa, lighting designer Natasha Katz and sound designer Nevin Steinberg. Casting is by The Telsey Office. Baseline Theatrical will serve as general manager.
Groban was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.” Ashford won a Tony for her work in “You Can’t Take it with You”; she was last seen on Broadway in a revival of “Sunday in the Park with George.” Further casting for “Sweeney Todd” will be announced at a later date.
