Industry capacity drops as more Broadway shows began previews

Seven Broadway shows began previews last week, bumping up the total weekly gross, but leading to a lower capacity across the industry.  The 31 productions reported a total gross of $28.8 million in the week ended April 3, up from the $26.8 million reported by 24 productions in the previous week.

Seven Broadway shows began previews last week, bumping up the total weekly gross, but leading to a lower capacity across the industry.

The 31 productions reported a total gross of $28.8 million in the week ended April 3, up from the $26.8 million reported by 24 productions in the previous week. Capacity fell to 85% from 89% in the previous week.

Among the relative newcomers, “Funny Girl” reported strong numbers for its first week of seven performances. The musical grossed $1.3 million and played to 100% capacity, with an average ticket price of $148.

Several returning shows saw a drop in their numbers from the previous week. Capacity at “Tina” fell to 51% from 58%, with the production grossing $751,186. “Dear Evan Hansen” reported a capacity of 72%, down from 81% in the previous week, and grossed $637,474.

“Paradise Square” grossed $296,350 and played to a capacity of 91%, its lowest numbers yet, but in a week that included press previews. The musical opened on Sunday.

“The Music Man” continued to top the grosses, bringing in $3.3 million, followed by “Hamilton” at $2.3 million, “Wicked” at $1.7 million and “The Lion King” at $1.6 million.
