‘Illinoise’ cancels May 8 evening performance

The musical began Broadway performances on April 24 at the St. James Theatre.

The May 8 evening performance of the new dance musical “Illinoise” has been cancelled, according to a post on the show’s Instagram account.

“Due to a tragedy within the ‘Illinoise’ community, tonight’s performance will be cancelled and performances will resume tomorrow,” reads the Instagram post. “We apologize for the inconvenience. All tickets for the cancelled performance will be refunded at the original point of purchase.”

Directed and choreographed by Justin Peck and featuring a book co-penned by Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury, “Illinoise” features the music of Sufjan Stevens from his album “Illinois.” The musical began Broadway performances on April 24 at the St. James Theatre. 

UPDATE (May 9): The “Illinoise” Instagram account has shared news of the passing of its production stage manager, Thomas J. Gates.

“With heavy hearts we mourn the passing of our Production Stage Manager, Thomas J. Gates,” the post reads. “Thom was the center of ‘Illinoise’ on Broadway, a beloved friend and collaborator. We are devastated for his husband Rick, another member of the ‘Illinoise’ community. These two amazing humans led our company on our journey since the beginning. We dedicate the run of ‘Illinoise’ to Thom and his loving memory.”
