“Hamilton” and multiple other large musicals canceled Broadway performances until after Christmas due breakthrough COVID-19 cases in the company.
“Hamilton,” now canceled through Dec. 26, had previously canceled its Dec. 17 through Dec. 19 performances, as well as its Dec. 15 performance due to the detection of positive results. The cancellations comes as Broadway enters what is typically its highest grossing period of the year.
On Monday afternoon, “Aladdin” announced that it was canceling performances from Dec. 21 through Dec. 24, with an expected resumption date of Dec. 26, after additional breakthrough cases were found in the company. “Aladdin” had previously canceled its Dec. 19 performance.
Later that day, “Dear Evan Hansen” announced the cancellation of shows from Dec. 20 through Dec. 26. It expects to resume on Dec. 27. “Ain’t Too Proud” announced a further cancellation through Dec. 26. “Hadestown” has canceled its shows until Dec. 28. Late Monday, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” announced its cancellation through Dec. 27, becoming the first play to cancel through Christmas.
The productions join “MJ” which had previously announced closure through Dec. 26, as well as several others that have announced a multi-day cancellation due to the virus. On Saturday, nine out of 32 running shows had canceled performances due to COVID-19 — “Company” also canceled due to a “non-Covid related illness.” On Sunday, 10 shows had canceled due to the virus.
