“Hadestown” led the Outer Critics Circle nominations Tuesday, with 12 nominations.
The Broadway musical was followed by “Tootsie” with 10 nominations and the Broadway revival of “Oklahoma!” with six. The Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers and commentators covering New York theater for out-of-town, national publications and other publications “beyond Broadway.”
The nominations include both Broadway and off-Broadway shows. This year a special achievement award will be given to the puppetry team that created and operates the gorilla at “King Kong,” and to The York Theatre Company.
“The Boys in the Band” was not eligible to be nominated because it did not give out tickets to the nominators. “Torch Song” was not considered because it ran off-Broadway during the 2017-2018 season and was eligible for awards then. However, “Hadestown,” which previously was considered for its off-Broadway run, was eligible again after its producers petitioned its “substantial changes” to the book, score and production.
Winners will be announced May 13.
