The Anaïs Mitchell musical “Hadestown” will play the National Theatre in London this November before transferring to Broadway in 2019, the show’s producers announced Thursday.
The musical, which was developed with and directed by Rachel Chavkin, originally ran off Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016 and played Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre in 2017. The show will be produced on Broadway by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy.
“Hadestown” will run at the National’s Olivier Theatre from Nov. 2, 2018 through Jan. 26, 2019.
The exact theater, casting and dates for the Broadway run have not yet been announced.
The musical, which features a mixture of American folk music and New Orleans jazz, follows Orpheus, a songwriter, as he battles with Hades and tries to win over Eurydice, whom he loves.
In addition to songs from Anaïs Mitchell, which originated out of a concept album, the show’s creative team includes choreographer David Neumann, Rachel Hauck on set design, Michael Krass on costume design, Bradley King on lighting design, Nevin Steinberg on sound design, Liam Robinson on music direction, Michael Chorney on arrangements and orchestrations, and Todd Sickafoose additional/co-arrangements and orchestrations.
