“Gutenberg! The Musical!” has announced release dates for its original Broadway cast recording. The previously announced album from Center Stage Records and Yellow Sound Label will be available digitally on May 3 and physically on May 17. The recording will feature Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, stars of the Broadway production, as well as a brief cameo from Mel Brooks in the role of the Guest Producer, which was different for each performance.
The recording of the score by Scott Brown and Anthony King will be produced and mixed by Michael Croiter. Van Dean, Marcia Goldberg and Andrew Paradis will serve as executive producers. Additionally, Brown, King and Marco Paguia are the album’s co-producers. T.O. Sterrett will provide music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations, with Liz Caplan as vocal supervisor and Paguia as music director.
Featuring a book by Brown and King, “Gutenberg!” follows a pair of neophyte playwrights as they present their new work, a musical about Johannes Gutenberg’s journey in creating the printing press, to prospective producers. The musical began previews on Sept. 15, 2023, and officially opened on Oct. 12 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. The production played a limited run through Jan. 28, 2024, after which the producers announced the production had recouped its $6.75 million capitalization.
While this production was the first on the Main Stem, “Gutenberg!” played previous Off-Broadway and Off-West End mountings. The Tony Administration Committee deemed that this production would be eligible as a revival for the purposes of the 77th annual Tony Awards.
Gutenberg!” was produced on Broadway by Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Patrick Catullo, Bad Robot Live, Seth A. Goldstein and Isaac Robert Hurwitz.
