The Broadway musical “Real Women Have Curves” has scheduled a post-show event. Following the 7:30 p.m. performance on April 22, Grammy Award winner Joy Huerta, the new musical’s co-composer and co-lyricist, will take part in a talkback with Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan.
The conversation will cover bringing pop music to Broadway (Estefan’s catalog was the soundtrack to her life story in the Broadway musical “On Your Feet!”), adapting their musical styles for the stage and telling women’s stories. The event is open to all attendees of the April 22 preview performance.
Featuring a score by Huerta and Benjamin Velez and a book by Lisa Loomer with Nell Benjamin, “Real Women Have Curves” is based on Josefina López’s play and the television movie of the same name. Set in 1987, the musical follows Ana, who, following high school graduation, is expected to remain in her hometown of Los Angeles and work in a garment factory alongside her mother to help support their family. Ana, however, dreams of starting over in New York City. The principal cast of “Real Women Have Curves” is led by Tatianna Córdoba as Ana and Justina Machado as her mother, Carmen.
Following a 2023 world premiere bow at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, “Real Women Have Curves” began Broadway previews on April 1. The Sergio Trujillo-directed and -choreographed production will open at the James Earl Jones Theatre on April 27. Nadia DiGiallonardo serves as music supervisor and Roberto Sinha serves as music director.
