Glenda Jackson will star in the title role of “King Lear” on Broadway this spring.
Produced by Scott Rudin at a to-be-announced theater, the play will begin previews March 6, 2019 and open April 11, 2019. Though Jackson played King Lear on the West End in 2016, this is a new production.
“Performing King Lear in London was a wonderful and fulfilling experience, but this is a role you continue to work on and to make new discoveries,” Jackson said in the press release. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to explore the role anew, and look forward to the challenge of performing it on Broadway.”
The show’s creative team and additional casting will be announced “in the coming weeks.”
After a 30-year-absence, Jackson returned to Broadway last season in “Three Tall Women” for which she won a Tony Award.
“King Lear” at the Old Vic was Jackson’s return to acting after spending 23 years as a member of Parliament. She received an Olivier nomination, the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress, and a Critics Circle Award for Best Shakespearean Performance for her West End performance.
