Four-time Tony Award-winning actress Zoe Caldwell passed away Feb. 16, at the age of 86.
She died due to complications from Parkison’s disease, her son, Charlie Whitehead, said in a release Tuesday. The Australian-born actor made her Broadway debut in 1965 in “The Devils,” closely followed by her 1966 performance in “Slapstick Tragedy,” for which she won her first Tony Award. She won her subsequent Tony Awards for her performances in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 1968, “Medea” in 1982 and “Master Class” in 1995.
Before coming to Broadway, Caldwell was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and an original member of the company at the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis.
Caldwell was married to theater producer and director Robert Whitehead, until his death in 2002. She is survived by two sons, Sam and Charlie Whitehead and two grandchildren, Ross and Ward Whitehead.
