Roundabout Theatre Company will bring “True West” to Broadway next season, starring Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano.
The Sam Shepard play will be directed by James Macdonald, who most recently directed “The Children” on Broadway, and open Jan. 24, 2019 at the American Airlines Theatre. It begins previews Dec. 27, 2018.
Hawke will play the role of “Lee,” who is a thief and older brother to “Austin,” a Hollywood screenwriter, played by Dano.
The pair have previously acted together in the film “Taking Lives,” and Hawke directed Dano in the off Broadway play “Things We Want.” Hawke was also a longtime collaborator with the late Shepard.
In addition to their film careers, Hawke has appeared in four Broadway plays, while Dano has appeared in three.
This is the first revival of Shepard’s play, which originally appeared at the Circle in the Square Theatre in 2000. Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly alternated the roles of “Austin” and “Lee” in the production.
The rest of the cast and creative team for the revival will be announced shortly, according to the press release.
