The New York City Center Encores! production of “Into The Woods” will play the St. James Theatre starting next month, Jujamcyn Theaters president Jordan Roth announced Thursday.
Directed by Encores! artistic director Lear deBessonet, the production will play an eight-week engagement with performances beginning June 28. The production, which will be the musical’s third on Broadway, will be dedicated to the memory of Stephen Sondheim.
A star-studded concert production of the Sondheim musical played New York City Center earlier this month as part of the Encores! series.
Much of the City Center cast will join for the Broadway transfer, including Sara Bareilles as the Baker’s Wife, Gavin Creel as the Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince, Cole Thompson as Jack and Julia Lester as Little Red Riding Hood. New to the cast are Brian D’Arcy James as the Baker, Patina Miller as the Witch, Phillipa Soo as Cinderella and Joshua Henry as Rapunzel’s Prince.
Notably, Neil Patrick Harris and Heather Headley, who headlined the earlier run, will not make the move to Broadway.
The cast will also include returning members Ta’Nika Gibson, Annie Golden, Albert Guerzon, David Patrick Kelly, Brooke Ishibashi, Kennedy Kanagawa and David Turner. It will also feature Jason Forbach, Mary Kate Moore, and Cameron Johnson. Additional casting is expected at a later date.
The Broadway run will reunite the City Center creative team, including music director Rob Berman and choreographer Lorin Latarro. The design team features David Rockwell as scenic designer, Andrea Hood as costume designer, Tyler Micoleau as lighting designer, Scott Lehrer and Alex Neumann as co-sound designers and James Ortiz as puppet designer.
‘Into The Woods’ is produced by Jujamcyn Theaters, Jordan Roth, New York City Center, Hunter Arnold, Nicole Eisenberg, Michael Cassel Group, Jessica R. Jenen, Daryl Roth, ShowTown Productions and Armstrong, Gold & Ross. Nicole Kastrinos is executive producer.
