Emilie Kouatchou, Broadway’s current Christine alternate in “The Phantom of the Opera,” will step into the role full-time next year, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh announced Friday.
Kouatchou became the first Black woman to play the role on Broadway, when she made her debut in October as the Christine alternate. She will take on the role starting Jan. 26, a date that coincides with the Broadway production’s 34th anniversary.
Meghan Picerno will play her final performance in the musical Jan. 23. Julia Udine, who has played the role on Broadway, as well as on tour, and serves as the current full-time standby for Christine, will take over as the alternate on Jan. 26.
“The Phantom of the Opera” reopened at the Majestic Theatre Oct. 22.
