NY1 and the Drama Desk Organization have postponed Sunday evening’s broadcast of the Drama Desk Awards amid protests in New York.
NY1 was originally scheduled to air a special presentation of the ceremony at 7:30 p.m., but that coverage has been postponed due to “breaking news events in New York,” the two organizations said in a statement. A new date for the broadcast will be announced in the coming days.
“The Drama Desk celebrates all that’s outstanding in the work of New York’s diverse theater artists and craftspeople. We regret the postponement of our awards ceremony tonight but, as an organization committed to the principle that all voices must be heard, we stand together with our black colleagues against the racial injustice and violence in our nation and city,” Drama Desk Presidents Charles Wright and David Barbour said in a statement.
Protests have been ongoing in New York and across the country this weekend as protestors speak out against the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
The Sunday night broadcast was originally scheduled to be hosted by Frank DiLella, with appearances by presenters including Tituss Burgess, James Corden, Beanie Feldstein, Alan Cumming, Audra McDonald and more.
The Drama Desk Awards are presented by the Drama Desk organization in partnership with Broadway Brands, which is the publisher of Broadway News.
