“Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” is opening at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre this spring, the show announced Tuesday.
The musical, which features the songs of Donna Summer, will be directed by Des McAnuff and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. The show comes to Broadway after a developmental production playing at the La Jolla Playhouse until Dec. 24.
It is scheduled to open on April 23, 2018, with preview performances beginning March 28, 2018.
The musical’s book is by Colman Domingo, Robert Cary and McAnuff, with songs by Summer as well as Giorgio Moroder, Paul Jabara and others not yet named.
The show is produced by Tommy Mottola and the Dodgers.
Paul Tazewell is the costume designer and scenic design is by Ron Melrose. Howell Binkley is the lighting designer, with sound by Gareth Owen and projections by Sean Nieuwenhuis.
The La Jolla production stars LaChanze as “Diva Donna,” Ariana DeBose as “Disco Donna” and Storm Lever as “Duckling Donna.” According to that production description, the musical tells the story of Summer’s rise to fame through the lens of her last concert.
