Devonté Hynes has been added to the creative team of the upcoming Broadway transfer of “Job.” Hynes, who is also known professionally as Blood Orange, will compose original music for Max Wolf Friedlich’s previously announced play, which will star Peter Friedman and Sydney Lemmon. “Job,” directed by Michael Herwitz, will begin previews on July 15 and open on July 30 at the Hayes Theater for a limited engagement through Sept. 29.
Singer-songwriter Hynes has released seven solo albums — four as Blood Orange and two as Lightspeed Champion. He received a 2021 Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance Grammy Award nomination for his collaboration with Third Coast Percussion on the album Fields. Prior to his solo career, Hynes was a member of the band Test Icicles.
“Anyone familiar with Dev’s work already knows what a naturally brilliant storyteller he is, so it’s no surprise that his work on ‘Job’ not only enriches the thematic and narrative threads but also deepens the emotional resonance of the play,” producer and dramaturg Hannah Getts said in a statement. “We are thrilled to integrate his innovative musical vision into the fabric of ‘Job.’”
Also newly announced are the two-hander’s understudies. Jeff Still and Arianna Gayle Stucki will understudy Friedman and Lemmon, respectively.
Still appeared in the Broadway mountings and subsequent national tours of both “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “August: Osage County.” He most recently appeared on the Main Stem in “The Minutes.”
Stucki appeared alongside Still in the tour of “Mockingbird.” “Job” will mark her Broadway debut.
“Job” follows Jane (Lemmon), who seeks the help of therapist Loyd (Friedman) after she is put on leave from her big tech company. Jane is determined to return to her job, however, Loyd suspects her work may be doing more harm than good.
“Job” is being produced by Getts, Alex Levy, Craig Balsam and P3 Productions.
