The upcoming Broadway premiere of Jen Silverman’s “The Roommate” will feature original music by Tony Award-winning composer David Yazbek. The previously announced production, starring Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow, will begin previews on Aug. 29 and open on Sept. 12 at Broadway’s Booth Theatre. The Jack O’Brien-directed two-hander is scheduled to play a limited run through Dec. 15.
Yazbek received Tony nominations for composing the scores for “The Full Monty” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (both of which were directed by Yazbek), “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (which featured LuPone), “Tootsie” and “The Band’s Visit,” winning a Tony for the latter. He won the 2024 Drama Desk Award for co-writing the lyrics for Off-Broadway’s “Dead Outlaw,” for which he also penned the music. “The Roommate” will mark his second time providing original music for a straight play, having previously done so for Larry David’s “Fish in the Dark.”
Also newly announced are additional members of “The Roommate”’s creative team, including wig, hair and makeup designers Robert Pickens and Katie Gell, as well as associate directors Marsha Mason and Simone Sault, the latter of whom will also provide movement.
Silverman’s play chronicles two roommates whose different backgrounds provide unique perspectives as they both go through a period of self-reflection and reinvention.
“The Roommate” is being produced by Chris Harper.
