Tony Award winner Danny Burstein has been announced to co-star in the upcoming Broadway production of “Gypsy.” The previously announced revival, directed by George C. Wolfe, will begin previews on Nov. 21 and open on Dec. 19 at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre. Burstein will play Herbie opposite Audra McDonald as Rose.

Burstein won a Tony Award for his featured performance in 2019’s “Moulin Rouge!” He has received six additional nods, for his leading turns in the 2011 revival of “Follies” and the 2015 mounting of “Fiddler on the Roof,” and for featured turns in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “South Pacific,” “Golden Boy” and “Cabaret.” His additional Main Stem credits include “Company,” “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “The Snow Geese” and “My Fair Lady.” Burstein is an original company member of Tony Randall’s National Actors Theatre, having made his Broadway debut in the troupe’s 1992 mounting of “A Little Hotel on the Side.”

Set in the 1920s and the 1930s, “Gypsy” follows Rose as she navigates the world of show business, pushing her daughters June and Louise into the spotlight in the Vaudeville circuit and, eventually, the stages of burlesque. The musical, which features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, is suggested by the memoirs of popular burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee. The 2024 staging will feature choreography by Camille A. Brown, newly announced music direction and supervision by Andy Einhorn and additional orchestrations/arrangements by Tony winner Daryl Waters.

The revival’s creative team will include Tony-winning scenic designer Santo Loquasto, Tony-nominated costume designer Toni-Leslie James, Tony-winning lighting designers Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, Tony-winning sound designer Scott Lehrer, hair/wig designer Mia Neal and makeup designer Michael Clifton. Rick Steiger will serve as production stage manager.

Additional casting, by Jordan Thaler and Heidi Griffiths, will be announced.

“Gypsy” is being produced by Tom Kirdahy, Mara Isaacs, Kevin Ryan and Diane Scott Carter.
