Concord Theatricals has announced the acquisition of the exclusive, global licensing rights to “Some Like It Hot.”
Based on Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s screenplay for the 1959 film of the same name, “Some Like It Hot” features a Tony Award-nominated score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a Tony-nominated book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin. The musical opened on Dec. 11, 2022 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre, and closed on Dec. 30, 2023. The production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, winning four.
“We are absolutely thrilled that ‘Some Like It Hot’ has joined forces with Concord Theatricals,” said Shaiman and Wittman in a joint statement. “We believe the joy and the discovery that come to the characters in our musical should and will be shared by people all over the world performing and experiencing our show.”
Concord Theatricals served as co-producer on “Some Like It Hot.” Concord Theatrical Recordings released the original cast album, which won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
“I’m grateful that the partnership with Concord, which began on Broadway, will continue with future productions,” noted López in a statement. “I’m very happy that audiences around the world will be able to see our story of friendship, community and self-determination.”
“We know that this terrific show with its hilarious book and swinging score will quickly become a favorite of producers and audiences worldwide,” added Sean Patrick Flahaven, chief theatricals executive of Concord.
“Some Like It Hot” is now among the other recently acquired titles under Concord’s purview, including Amy Herzog’s 2023 Tony-nominated adaptation of “A Doll’s House,” 2023 Best Play Tony nominee “Fat Ham” and 2020 Best Musical Tony nominee “Jagged Little Pill.”
A North American tour of “Some Like It Hot” will launch in fall 2024.
“Some Like It Hot” was produced on Broadway by the Shubert Organization and Neil Meron.
