‘Children of a Lesser God’ will close on May 27 after having played 23 preview performances and 54 regular performances.
This news comes after the play only received one Tony nomination and has had struggling grosses. The revival, produced by Hal Luftig at Studio 54, opened on April 11, stars Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff, who received a Tony nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.
The revival, directed by Kenny Leon, did not receive stellar reviews when it opened. Grosses reached a high of $375,274 in the week ended April 8, 2018, but brought in $297,762 last week.
“I’m very proud of the work Kenny Leon, our remarkable cast, and creative team have done to bring this beautiful production to life,” Luftig said in the press release. “Mark Medoff’s beautiful play has once again shown audiences the power of open and honest communication. In a world where we too often talk over each other and struggle to be heard there is immense power when you open your mind and start listening.”
This is the first show to announce closing after the Tony nominations were announced last week.
