The chocolate factory is closing up its Broadway shop.
“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” announced Wednesday that it will close on Jan. 14, 2018, at which point the show will have played 27 previews and 305 regular performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
Alongside the closing announcement, the producers announced a U.S. national tour for the musical in September 2018 as well as plans for an Australian tour in 2018 and in the United Kingdom in 2019.
“Our remarkable creative team, led by the incomparable Jack O’Brien, have re-imagined the story of Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka for a new generation. We now look forward to a long life for the production across North America and around the world,” said producers Mark Kaufman,Kevin McCormick and Caro Newling in a statement.
The show opened on April 23, 2017, just ahead of last year’s Tony Awards season deadline, but failed to capture any nominations.
The cast was led by Christian Borle as Willy Wonka, with Jake Ryan Flynn, Ryan Foust and Ryan Sell alternating the role of Charlie Bucket. O’Brien directed the show, which had music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Whitman and Marc Shaiman and a book by David Greig.
The show came to Broadway after a West End run beginning in 2013.
“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Langley Park Productions and Neal Street Productions.
