Roundabout Theatre Company has revealed complete casting for the Broadway bow of David Henry Hwang’s “Yellow Face.” The previously announced production, directed by Leigh Silverman, will begin previews on Sept. 13 and open on Oct. 1 at Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre. The production is scheduled to play a limited run through Nov. 24.
Joining the previously announced Daniel Dae Kim as “DHH” will be Francis Jue as HYH and others, Kevin Del Aguila as Actor A, Ryan Eggold as Marcus, Marinda Anderson as Actor B, Greg Keller as Reporter/NWOAC and Shannon Tyo as Leah and others.
Jue received Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards, in addition to a Drama Desk Award nomination, for his performance in this same role in the Public Theater’s 2007 Off-Broadway production of “Yellow Face.” He made his Broadway debut in Hwang’s 1988 Tony-winning play “M. Butterfly.”
“Yellow Face” marks Del Aguila’s return to Broadway following his Tony Award-nominated turn in 2022’s “Some Like It Hot.” Currently featured in the Off-Broadway mounting of “Little Shop of Horrors,” Del Aguila’s additional Main Stem credits include “Frozen,” “Rocky” and “Peter and the Starcatcher.”
Keller most recently appeared on Broadway in 2016’s “Our Mother’s Brief Affair.” He was featured in Broadway revivals of “Wit” in 2012 and “Uncle Vanya” in 2000.
Eggold, Anderson and Tyo will all make their Main Stem debuts in “Yellow Face.” Eggold starred in NBC’s series “New Amsterdam,” while Anderson has appeared Off-Broadway in “You Will Get Sick” and “Merry Me.” Tyo garnered Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards and a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in Off-Broadway’s “The Chinese Lady.”
In “Yellow Face,” playwright “DHH” protests the act of yellow-face casting in a musical, only to mistakenly cast a white actor in an Asian role in his own play.
The creative team for “Yellow Face” will include Tony-nominated scenic designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Anita Yavich, Tony-nominated lighting designer Lap Chi Chu, projection designer Yee Eun Nam and sound designers Caroline Eng and Kate Marvin, who will also compose original music for the play.
“Yellow Face” is being produced by Roundabout, under the leadership of interim artistic director Scott Ellis.
Update: An earlier version of this article did not include the projection designer. This is newly announced and has been added.
