“The Outsiders” is switching up its fall performance schedule. Beginning on Sept. 12, the musical will offer 2 p.m. Thursday matinées at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. These will take the place of “The Outsiders”’ former Wednesday evening performances, maintaining a total eight performances each week.
In addition to the Thursday afternoons, “The Outsiders” will continue to offer 2 p.m. matinées on Wednesday and Saturdays, as well as 3 p.m. Sunday matinées.
“Embracing the idea that there is no longer a traditional work week, this new performance schedule with Thursday matinées will offer additional opportunities for locals, tourists and business professionals to catch a show during the day,” said producer Matthew Rego of the Araca Group. “Additionally, now that school is back in session, we are thrilled to provide student groups more options to see ‘The Outsiders,’ as the demand has warranted.”
Broadway performances on Thursday afternoons have been occurring with more frequency lately. Over the summer, both “Job” and “Oh, Mary!” offered 5 p.m. matinées on Thursdays. The plays both subsequently changed their schedules for the fall, while keeping eight performances each week. “Job” now offers Sunday matinées and “Oh, Mary!” offers Thursday matinées during select weeks only.
While four matinées per week is uncommon, it is not unprecedented. “A Beautiful Noise” played four afternoon performances each week for the final 10 months of its run.
“The Outsiders” features a Tony Award-nominated book by Adam Rapp and Justine Levine and a Tony-nominated score by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Levine.
Based on the 1967 novel by Susie Hinton and the 1983 film adaptation by Francis Ford Coppola, the Tulsa-set “Outsiders” is a coming-of-age story of two rival teenage gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. The Danya Taymor-directed musical opened on Broadway on April 11 and received 12 Tony Award nominations, winning four, including trophies for Best Musical and Taymor’s direction. The production’s weekly grosses have broken the Jacobs’ house record eight times as of the week ending Sept. 1.
“The Outsiders” is produced by the Araca Group, American Zoetrope, Olympus Theatricals, Sue Gilad & Larry Rogowsky and Angelina Jolie.
