Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced the nominees for the 95th annual Academy Awards on Jan. 24. Among those recognized with nominations were a number of Broadway stars.
Angela Bassett, who recently won the Golden Globe for her performance in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” was nominated for Actress in a Supporting Role. This marks the first time an actress from the Marvel universe has been nominated for an Oscar. Bassett has appeared on Broadway in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” and “The Mountaintop.” Stephanie Hsu, best known on Broadway for featured roles in “Be More Chill” and “SpongeBob SquarePants,” earned a nomination in the same category for her turn in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Brian Tyree Henry earned a nod as Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “Causeway,” which, notably, was directed by Broadway’s Lila Neugebauer. Henry last appeared on Broadway in “Lobby Hero,” for which he earned a Tony Award nomination, and originated the role of the General in “The Book of Mormon.” Two-time Tony winner Judd Hirsch is also nominated here for his performance in “The Fabelmans.” With 10 Broadway credits to his name, Hirsch last appeared on the Main Stem in “Sixteen Wounded.”
The category for Original Screenplay includes a rematch between five-time Tony nominee Martin McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Steven Spielberg and Tony winner Tony Kushner for “The Fabelmans.” The two parties faced off earlier this year at the Golden Globes, where McDonagh walked away with the trophy for his screenplay. McDonagh and Spielberg were also nominated in the Achievement in Directing category for their respective films. Both movies were also nominated in the Best Picture category.
David Byrne earned a nomination for Music (Original Song) alongside collaborators Ryan Lott and Mitski for “This Is the Life,” written for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Byrne starred on Broadway last year in his “American Utopia” and will return to the Main Stem this summer as songwriter and co-conceiver of “Here Lies Love.” Diane Warren was also nominated for her song “Applause” in the film “Tell It Like a Woman.” A bio-musical about the songwriter is currently in development.
In the Actor in a Leading Role category, Broadway alumnus and Tony nominee Bill Nighy earned a nomination for his performance in “Living.” On the Rialto, Nighy starred in 2015’s “Skylight” as well as 2006’s “The Vertical Hour.”
Tony nominees Cate Blanchett and Michelle Williams were both nominated as Actress in a Leading Role, Blanchett for “Tár” and Williams for “The Fabelmans.” Blanchett starred in the Broadway production of “The Present” and Williams played Sally Bowles in the most recent revival of “Cabaret,” after which she was Tony-nominated for “Blackbird.”
The Oscars’ highest award, Best Picture, not only included names like McDonagh as a producer for “Inisherin” and Kushner for “The Fabelmans,” but the category also recognized producer Baz Luhrmann and team for “Elvis” and producer Frances McDormand and her colleagues for “Women Talking.” Luhrmann is responsible for the film “Moulin Rouge” which inspired the current Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name. McDormand is a Tony-winning actor who has starred on Broadway four times. McDormand previously won a Best Picture Oscar in 2021 for “Nomadland.”
