Nominations for the 2025 Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards were announced on Jan. 22. The awards acknowledge accurate and inclusive portrayals of LGBTQ people and issues across all mediums, and media that increases LGBTQ visibility. Eligible work for the 36th annual ceremony had to be published, released, performed or broadcast between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024. The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremony will take place on March 27 in Los Angeles.
Three Broadway plays and two musicals were nominated in the Outstanding Broadway production category, while two stage-to-screen adaptations (“Mean Girls” and “Wicked”) and the 2024 Tony Awards ceremony were acknowledged elsewhere.
The slate of nominees in the Outstanding Broadway Production category include “Cult of Love,” “Illinoise,” “Lempicka,” “Mother Play” and “Oh, Mary!”
The 2024 motion picture adaptation of Broadway’s “Wicked” earned a nod in the Outstanding Film — Wide Theatrical Release category along with the film adaptation of the musical “Mean Girls.”
The 77th annual Tony Awards ceremony was named a nominee in the Outstanding Variety or Talk Show Episode category. Also nominated in this category was the 98th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which featured performances from Broadway’s “Death Becomes Her,” “Hell’s Kitchen” and “The Outsiders.”
The performers associated with the current revival of “Cabaret” were nominated in the category of Outstanding Music: Adam Lambert, who received a nod for his album “Afters,” and Orville Peck, nominated for his album “Stampede.” Lambert will continue his limited engagement in the role of the Emcee in “Cabaret” through March 29; Peck will succeed Lambert in the role beginning on March 31. Also named in this category was Tony-winning composer Elton John for providing the soundtrack to the Disney+ documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
For its “immeasurable impact and contributions to LGBTQ acceptance and visibility,” the Off-Broadway production of “Drag: The Musical” received a special, non-competitive honor.
GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, along with Rich Ferraro and Anthony Allen Ramos, will serve as executive producers of the event. Tony Morrison will serve as supervising producer, while Jose Useche will serve as producer of the ceremony, which is produced in partnership with STAMP Event Company.
