Broadway’s box office held steady during a holiday week – and for many, the first week of summer vacation – as “Into the Woods” began previews.
For the week ending July 3, Broadway grossed $29,926,106, down less than 3% from the previous week. The 28 productions played to nearly 87% capacity, nearly holding steady from last week at a less than .5% decrease.
“Hamilton” and “MJ” played to 100% capacity, while “A Strange Loop” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two” played to over 99% capacity.
The top-grossing show was “The Music Man,” earning more than $3 million despite the absence of Sutton Foster, who tested positive for COVID-19 and has missed performances since June 26. “The Lion King” was the second-highest grossing show, bringing in $2,162,416.00, and just ousting “Hamilton,” which sits at number three.
“Into the Woods,” the transfer of the New York City Center Encores! production, began previews last week, grossing $1,380,760.25 and playing to 94% capacity through seven performances.
“MJ” continues to perform well at the box office following the Tony Awards. The show had its highest-grossing week at $1,713,666.00.
“Plaza Suite” played only six performances last week, which was a planned schedule change. The play still grossed $1,045,851 and played to nearly 100% capacity.
“Funny Girl” saw a 30% decrease in grosses, taking in less than $1 million through a full performance week for the first time. The musical revival grossed $743,212.80 and played to about 75% capacity.
“Paradise Square” also saw a decrease of 17% at the box office. The new musical grossed $300,508.40 and played to 54% capacity.
