The 2017 Broadway musical “Anastasia” will take a bow down under. The Darko Tresnjak-helmed musical will have its Australian premiere at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne in December, prior to touring to Perth and Sydney in 2026. The Australian mounting is being produced by John Frost for Crossroads Live and Opera Australia.

Featuring a book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, “Anastasia” is inspired by the real-life mystery behind the rumored escape of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov during the Russian Revolution.

“The legend of Anastasia has intrigued the world for many years and I’ve been wanting to bring this musical to Australia since it premiered on Broadway in 2017,” Frost said in a statement. “It’s a story full of mystery and romance with a magnificent score that I know Australia is going to fall in love with.”

“Opera Australia is thrilled to be once again partnering with John Frost to bring another world class musical to Australian theatres,” added Simon Militano, acting CEO of Opera Australia. “We expect the glorious music, spectacle and intrigue of Anastasia will captivate audiences around the country.”

“Anastasia” began Broadway previews on March 23, 2017 and opened on April 24 at the Broadhurst Theatre. The production, which received two 2017 Tony Award nominations, closed on March 31, 2019 following 808 performances. A pair of North American tours followed, in addition to replica mountings in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico and Japan.
