Nominations for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards were announced on Dec. 9. Broadway was well-represented among the honors, which recognize achievement in television and film. Thirteen of the fourteen performance categories included Tony winners, nominees and other Broadway alumni.
The film adaptation of Broadway’s “Wicked,” which enjoyed a record-breaking opening-weekend at the box office, earned four nominations. The Jon M. Chu-directed movie musical was nominated for Best Motion Picture — Musical as well as in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. The film’s stars, Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo and Broadway alum Ariana Grande, were nominated in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture categories, respectively.
Jeremy Strong, who took home the 2024 Leading Actor in a Play Tony for Amy Herzog’s adaptation of “An Enemy of the People,” was nominated in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture category for “The Apprentice.” Strong is nominated alongside Tony winner Denzel Washington for “Gladiator II” and Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain.” Both Washington and Culkin will appear in 2025 Main Stem revivals: “Othello” and “Glengarry Glen Ross,” respectively.
Washington’s “Othello” co-star Jake Gyllenhaal was Golden Globe-nominated for his leading turn in the television series “Presumed Innocent.” Gyllenhaal is nominated in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series — Drama category, which also includes Tony winner Eddie Redmayne, who was cited for “The Day of the Jackal.”
The Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama slate comprised four Broadway veterans, the most of any category. Ralph Fiennes, a Tony winner for the 1995 revival of “Hamlet,” was nominated for “Conclave,” along with “A Steady Rain” and “Macbeth” alum Daniel Craig for “Queer.” Colman Domingo, a two-time Tony nominee, was nominated for “Sing Sing, while Sebastian Stan received a nod for “The Apprentice.” Stan, who appeared on the Main Stem in “Talk Radio” and “Picnic,” received an additional nomination in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy category for “A Different Man.” Stan is the only double acting nominee.
Three-time Tony winner Kevin Kline received his sixth Golden Globe nomination. Kline was recognized in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television category for his work in “Disclaimer.”
Two-time Tony nominee Allison Janney received her seventh Golden Globe nomination, this year earning a nod in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television category for “The Diplomat.” One of her fellow nominees is Broadway veteran Liza Colón-Zayas, who received her first Golden Globe nomination for her turn in “The Bear.”
The leading actor categories for musical or comedy television series both acknowledged several Broadway alums. Steve Martin, a two-time Tony nominee for co-penning the book and score to 2016’s “Bright Star,” was nominated for “Only Murders in the Building,” alongside co-star and 1999 Tony winner Martin Short. The Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy category includes Tony nominee Jean Smart for her portrayal of stand-up comic Debra Vance in “Hacks” as well as Broadway alum Kristen Bell for “Nobody Wants This.”
Tony nominee Cristin Milioti was nominated for her performance in “The Penguin,” alongside fellow Tony nominee Cate Blanchett for “Disclaimer” and Main Stem alum Sofía Vergara for “Griselda.”
The sole acting category to not feature any Broadway veterans was the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television category.
