The Broadway revival of “Once Upon a Mattress” will host a weekly “Princess Test” series. The “Princess Test” will take place in the box office lobby of the musical’s home, the Hudson Theatre, two hours prior to each Thursday evening performance’s curtain time. Free and open to the public, the inaugural “Princess Test” will take place on Aug 1.
A new special guest will host each event, which will include trivia and other contests as a homage to the musical in which the character Queen Aggravain requires prospective matches for her son, Prince Dauntless, to complete challenges to prove their Princess status. Prizes include tickets to the show.
The revival of “Once Upon a Mattress,” a transfer from a winter 2024 run at New York City Center Encores!, will begin Broadway previews on July 31 and open on Aug. 12. The Lear deBessonet-directed production is slated to play a limited engagement through Nov. 30. An adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea,” the musical features music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer. Amy Sherman Palladino has written an updated version of the musical’s original book by Barer, Dean Fuller and Jay Thompson.
Sutton Foster stars as Winnifred, alongside previously announced principal cast members Michael Urie as Prince Dauntless, Brooks Ashmanskas as the Wizard, Daniel Breaker as the Jester, Will Chase as Sir Harry, Nikki Renée Daniels as Lady Larken, Ana Gasteyer as Queen Aggravain and David Patrick Kelly as King Sextimus.
“Once Upon a Mattress” is being produced by Seaview and Creative Partners Productions.
