Friends and family of the late Gavin Creel will come together for a memorial celebration at the St. James Theatre on Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. The event, which is open to the public, aims to honor Creel’s remarkable contributions to the theater world and his impact on those who knew him.
The Broadway Theatre Owners Committee have also announced that every Broadway theater will dim its lights on Dec. 3 at 6:45 p.m.
Creel passed away on Sep. 30 at the age of 48. With eight Broadway credits, Creel broke out in 2002’s “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” the music that marked his Main Stem debut as well as his first Tony Award nomination. He was later nominated for his turn as Claude in the 2009 revival of “Hair” and won the Tony for best featured actor in a musical for his performance as Cornelius Hackl in the 2017 revival of “Hello, Dolly!”
In addition to his acting, Creel was an activist as well as a writer. His show, “Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice,” played Off-Broadway’s MCC Theater during the 2023-2024 season.
In lieu of flowers, Creel’s family requests donations be made in his name to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
To attend the memorial celebration, attendees are encouraged to RSVP by emailing their name and contact information to GavinCelebration@BespokeTheatricals.com.
