“BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical” is headed to Broadway. The new musical will open on the Main Stem in spring 2025. Jasmine Amy Rogers, who played the titular role of Betty Boop in the production’s out-of-town Chicago premiere, announced the news during an NBC New York interview. While the production’s press team confirmed the Broadway transfer, no opening night date or venue have been announced.
“BOOP!,” which features music by multiple Grammy Award winner David Foster, lyrics by two-time Tony Award nominee Susan Birkenhead and a book by Tony winner Bob Martin, played Chicago’s CIBC Theatre from Nov. 19 to Dec. 24, 2023. Jerry Mitchell, two-time Tony winner and 2023 Isabelle Stevenson Award recipient, served as director and choreographer for the Chicago mounting.
Created by Max Fleischer, the now-iconic Betty Boop character premiered in 1930 as part of Fleischer’s “Talkartoons” series, one of the first animated “talkies.” In “BOOP!,” Betty longs for a break from her black-and-white world of super-celebrity to enjoy an ordinary day off. Armed with her inimitable looks, voice and style, Betty embarks on a whirlwind adventure of color, music and love in New York City.
Producing, creative and design teams, as well as casting for “BOOP!”’s Broadway premiere, will be announced at a later date.
