Principal casting has been announced for the upcoming Broadway revival of “The Who’s Tommy.” The previously announced production will begin previews on March 8 at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre, ahead of a March 28 opening night. The production is a transfer of the 2023 Des McAnuff-helmed mounting at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.
“Tommy” will feature a principal cast identical to that of the Goodman production. Alison Luff will play Mrs. Walker opposite Adam Jacobs as Captain Walker. The cast will also feature John Ambrosino as Uncle Ernie, Bobby Conte as Cousin Kevin and Christina Sajous as the Acid Queen. They join the previously announced Ali Louis Bourzgui, who will make his Broadway debut reprising his Jeff Award-winning performance in the musical’s titular role.
Luff was most recently seen on Broadway as Jenna in “Waitress.” Her other Main Stem credits include Rachel in “Escape to Margaritaville,” Fantine in the 2014 revival of “Les Misérables” and two tenures as Elphaba in the national tour of “Wicked.”
Jacobs created the titular role in “Aladdin” and spent three years in the Broadway production before leading the national tour. He was also seen as Marius in “Les Misérables” and Simba in “The Lion King,” both on tour and on the Main Stem.
Ambrosino is also a “Les Misérables” veteran, having played Claquesous and Bamatabois in the 2017 touring production. “Tommy” marks his Broadway debut.
Conte played PJ in the 2021 revival of “Company.” He made his Broadway debut originating the role of Calogero in 2016’s musical “A Bronx Tale.”
“Tommy” will be Sajous’ sixth Broadway credit. She made her debut in 2010’s “American Idiot,” followed by roles in “Baby, It’s You!,” “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” “Holler if Ya Hear Me” and, most recently, “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
Additional casting, by Tara Rubin Casting/Merri Sugarman, will be announced at a later date.
An adaptation of the rock band The Who’s 1969 album of the same name, “Tommy” features a Tony-winning score by Pete Townshend. Townshend and McAnuff serve as co-book writers. The musical followsTommy Walker, whose pinball prowess helps him heal following a traumatic event.
“The Who’s Tommy” is being produced on Broadway by Stephen Gabriel and Ira Pittelman.
