Tony Award winners Billy Porter and Alan Cumming have signed on to the producing team of the new play “Sugar Daddy.” The previously announced solo piece, written and performed by Sam Morrison, will begin previews on Sept. 20 and open on Sept. 29 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, California. Tony nominee Stephen Brackett will direct the play, which is expected to open on Broadway in 2025.
Porter is the recipient of three Tony Awards. His first, in 2013, was for a leading performance in “Kinky Boots,” which was followed by a 2022 trophy as a co-producer on the Best Musical winner “A Strange Loop” (which was also directed by Brackett). In 2024, Porter was awarded the Tonys’ Isabelle Stevenson Award. Porter’s screen turn on the series “Pose” won him a 2019 Primetime Emmy Award.
Cumming’s pair of Tony wins were for a 1998 acting turn in “Cabaret” and, as with Porter, as a co-producer of 2022’s “A Strange Loop.” Cumming is a five-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee for acting work on “The Good Wife” and for hosting duties of “The Traitors” and the 69th Annual Tony Awards.
“Sugar Daddy” follows comedian Morrison as he grapples with the COVID-19-induced death of the love of his life. The play chronicles Morrison’s experience of using comedy to journey through his grief.
Lead producers of “Sugar Daddy” are Dale A. Mott and Charles D. Urstadt of Edgewood Entertainment.
