The revival of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” has announced its Broadway company, after a prior casting dispute led to the resignation of its original director.
Alongside the previously announced Annette Bening and Tracy Letts, Benjamin Walker, star of “American Psycho” on Broadway, will play Chris Keller, the son of Bening and Letts’ characters. Francesca Carpanini, who made her Broadway debut in 2017 revival of “The Little Foxes,” will play Ann Deever and Hampton Fluker, a regular on the television series “Shades of Blue,” will play George Deever, the sibling roles at the center of the dispute between former director Gregory Mosher and the Arthur Miller Estate.
Michael Hayden will play Dr. Jim Bayliss, Jenni Barber will play Lydia Lubey, Nehal Joshi will play Frank Lubey and Chinasa Ogbuagu will play Sue Bayliss.
According to the Washington Post, Mosher had planned to cast black actors in the roles of George and Ann Deever, but was met with resistance by the Miller Estate. As the Post reported, Rebecca Miller approved of a black actor in the role of George, but not Ann, who dates the son of Bening and Letts. The relationship between Ann and a white actor might “white-wash” the racism of the time, Miller told the Post. Mosher resigned over the dispute.
The revival, which features a black actor in the role of George and other actors of color, is now helmed by director Jack O’Brien. It begins preview performances at the American Airlines Theatre on April 4, with an official opening set for April 22.
The design team will include set designer Douglas W. Schmidt, costume designer Jane Greenwood, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer John Gromada, video projection designer Jeff Sugg, hair and wig designer Tom Watson and Bob James, providing original music.
