‘Back to the Future’ will close on Broadway

The musical will continue on a national tour.

“Back to the Future” has set an end date. The musical, based on the 1985 film of the same name, will play its final performance on Jan. 5, 2025. Following previews that began on June 30, 2023, “Back to the Future” opened on Aug. 3 at the Winter Garden Theatre. By the time of closing, the production will have played 35 previews and 597 regular performances.

Featuring a score by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard and a book by Bob Gale, “Back to the Future” follows teenager Marty McFly, who, alongside the eccentric Doc Brown, travels back in time to ensure his parents meet during their teenage years.

The musical’s current cast includes Casey Likes as Marty McFly, Roger Bart in a Tony Award-nominated turn as Doc Brown, Evan Alexander Smith as George McFly, Liana Hunt as Lorraine McFly, Jelani Remy as Goldie Wilson/Marvin Berry, Nathaniel Hackmann as Biff Tannen and David Josefsberg as Strickland.

“Back to the Future” features direction by John Rando and choreography by Chris Bailey, scenic and costume design by Tim Hatley, lighting design by Tim Lutkin and Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Gareth Owen and video design by Finn Ross.

The production received two nominations for 2024 Tony Awards. In addition to the aforementioned Bart, Hatley and Ross shared a Best Scenic Design of a Musical nomination. A national tour of the musical launched in June.
