The Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge!” has revealed two incoming principal players. Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl will take over the role of the Duke of Monroth and Samantha Dodemaide will step into the role of Nini on Jan. 28, 2025 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The duo will succeed current “Moulin Rouge!” stars David Harris and Sophie Carmen-Jones, respectively, who will depart the production on Jan. 26. Karl will play a limited engagement in the role through July 20 while Harris appears, as previously announced, in the Stephen Sondheim revue “Old Friends” at Manhattan Theatre Club in spring 2025. Harris will return to “Moulin Rouge!” on July 22.
Karl received Tony nominations for his featured turn in “On the Twentieth Century” as well as leading turns in “Rocky” and “Groundhog Day.” For the original London staging of “Groundhog Day,” Karl won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. Karl is currently featured in the Off-Broadway return engagement of “Teeth.”
Dodemaide originated the role of Nini in the 2021 Australian production of “Moulin Rouge!” Her additional Aussie stage credits include playing the title role in “Violet” and Dorothy on a tour of “The Wizard of Oz.” “Moulin Rouge!” at the Hirschfeld will mark Dodemaide’s Main Stem debut.
The current principal company of “Moulin Rouge!” includes Solea Pfeiffer as Satine, John Cardoza as Christian, Robert Petkoff as Harold Zidler, André Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec and Pepe Muñoz as Santiago. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Stephen Kopel.
The Belle Époque Paris-set musical follows Christian, a young writer newly arrived in France, and his romance with Satine, the headliner at the infamous Moulin Rouge nightclub. Featuring Tony Award-winning direction by Alex Timbers and Tony-winning choreography by Sonya Tayeh, “Moulin Rouge!” opened on July 25, 2019 and went on to win 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The production announced recoupment in 2022.
“Moulin Rouge!” is produced by Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan OAM for Global Creatures and Bill Damaschke.
