Additional casting has been revealed for the upcoming Kenny Leon-directed mounting of Shakespeare’s “Othello.” Tony Award winner Andrew Burnap will play the role of Cassio, Anthony Michael Lopez will play Roderigo, Daniel Pearce will play Brabantio and Kimber Elayne Sprawl will take on the role of Emilia. The previously announced production, which will begin previews on Feb. 24, 2025 and open on March 23, will play the Ethel Barrymore Theatre for a limited engagement through June 8.
Burnap won a Tony for his leading turn in 2019’s “The Inheritance.” He most recently appeared on Broadway in the 2023 revival of “Camelot.” He will play Jonathan in the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Disney’s “Snow White.”
“Othello” will mark the second Main Stem appearance in a Leon-helmed play for Lopez in the 2024-2025 season; he is currently featured in the revival of “Our Town.” This will also mark his second appearance in a New York staging of “Othello,” having performed in the 2016 New York Theatre Workshop mounting.
This announcement will similarly indicate two Broadway credits in Leon-directed productions this season for Sprawl, who served as an understudy in “Home.” She has also appeared in “Girl From the North Country,” “A Bronx Tale,” “Wicked” and “Beautiful.”
No stranger to interpreting the Bard, Pearce played Polonius in the 2023 Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park production of “Hamlet.” He made his Broadway debut replacing in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and has also appeared in “Machinal.”
They will appear alongside the previously announced Denzel Washington in the titular role, Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago and Molly Osborne as Desdemona. Additional casting, by Duncan Stewart and Jarrett Reiche of ARC Casting, will be announced.
The Shakespearean classic follows Othello, a Moorish general who falls prey to his subordinate Iago’s malicious manipulation, causing him to act out against his wife, Desdemona.
