“Anastasia” is ending its run after two years on Broadway.
The musical announced Tuesday that it will play its final show at the Broadhurst Theatre on March 31. “Anastasia” currently has a national tour underway, as well as productions in Madrid and Stuttgart, Germany, with more planned.
When it closes, “Anastasia” will have played 808 regular and 34 preview performances. It came to Broadway in March 2017 after a world premiere at Hartford Stage.
The musical posted strong grosses early in its run, but experienced some turbulence this season, with grosses falling in early 2019 to $585,391 in the week ended Jan. 27, 2019 and $508,700 in the week ended Feb. 3.
According to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, as of March 2018, the show had a stop clause of $645,000, meaning the theater owner could choose to end the production if its net adjusted grosses fell below that number for two consecutive weeks.
The Broadway production was capitalized for up to $15 million.
The musical, which features a book by Terrence McNally and a score by Stephen
Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, is produced by Stage Entertainment, Bill Taylor, Tom Kirdahy, Hunter Arnold and Dan Hinde.
Christy Altomare has played the title role of Anastasia through the entirety of the show’s Broadway run. Cast members John Bolton and Constantine Germanacos have also remained with the show since it began previews on Broadway.
In addition to its two currently running international productions, which began in the fall of 2018, the musical has announced plans to bring productions to Holland, Korea, Japan, Mexico, Australia and Brazil.
The national tour plans to visit more than 40 U.S. and Canadian cities over the span of 80 weeks, through 2020.
