The American Theatre Wing is unique in that it is the only nonprofit tasked with serving theater as a whole across the United States. It serves and connects the epicenter of theater on Broadway with nonprofit and regional institutions as well as individual artists at every stage of their development. Since 2011, Heather Hitchens has led the Wing and its myriad programs.

In the third part of Broadway News’ Q&A series with Hitchens, the president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing offered insight about how the industry can better advocate for itself when it comes to government. But live performance and the arts in the U.S. may have a more fundamental problem: the culture of theater.

In this fourth and final part of the series, Hitchens shares her thoughts about how we can shift the psychology around theater as a luxury for some to its value as a necessity for all.
