Three readings of “Puck’d: A Middle-Aged Summer Night’s Dream” will take place in New York City. Matt Hoverman’s farcical sequel to Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” will offer presentations on Nov. 14 and 15 at Manhattan’s Five Angels Theatre. Tony Award winner John Rando will direct the presentation, which is being produced by SunnySpot Productions (Bruce Robert Harris, Jack W. Batman and Mickey White).
“Puck’d” offers a follow-up to the fates of the four young lovers of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.” Now middle-aged and unhappily married, the quartet find themselves slowly falling under the spell of the forest’s enchantment as they chase after their teenage children, who have just eloped.
The “Puck’d” presentation will feature Tony winner Alex Newell, Tony nominees Kerry Butler, Kathryn Meisle and Reg Rogers, as well as Abubakr Ali, David Costabile, Patrick Kerr and Ella Stiller. Sidney J. Burgoyne will read the stage directions. Casting is by Tara Rubin and Louis DiPaolo.
Hoverman’s previous works include “Who You See Here,” “The Glint,” Thrillsville” and the Drama Desk Award-nominated musical “The Audience.” As a television writer, he won the 2014 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program for PBS’ “Arthur.” Rando took home the 2002 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for “Urinetown.” He received a second nomination in the same category for helming the 2014 revival of “On The Town.”
SunnySpot’s previous Broadway producing credits include the 2014 revival of “You Can’t Take It With You,” 2016’s “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” and 2023’s “New York, New York.”
