A group of creative talents who have been seen on Broadway were honored with trophies at the 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on Sept. 15. Eugene Levy and Dan Levy co-hosted the event, honoring achievement in television, which was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The Emmys were broadcast live on ABC.

Among the evening’s winners were Alex Edelman, who took home the award in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special category for a telecast version of his Broadway solo play “Just for Us,” which in June was honored with a special 2024 Tony Award. Edelman beat out Mike Birbiglia, who was nominated in the same category for “The Old Man & the Pool,” which played Broadway during the 2022-2023 season. Coincidentally, Birbiglia was a producer of Broadway’s “Just for Us.”

Additionally, Billy Crudup, a Broadway regular and a Tony winner for his performance in “The Coast of Utopia,” won his second Emmy in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his turn as Cory Ellison in “The Morning Show.”

Liza Colón-Zayas, a New York stage veteran who was seen on Broadway in “Between Riverside and Crazy,” won her first Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her turn as Tina Marrero in “The Bear.” Colón-Zayas won in a category that also included Broadway alumni Carol Burnett, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Meryl Streep.

Jean Smart, who last appeared on Broadway in 2000’s “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” won her third Emmy Award as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Deborah Vance in “Hacks.” It marked Smart’s sixth overall Emmy win.

And Alan Cumming, a Tony winner for his performance in 1998’s “Cabaret” revival and as a co-producer on “A Strange Loop,” won an Emmy in the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category for “The Traitors.” Last week, Cumming won an Emmy as Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program for the series.

During the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sept. 8, Broadway’s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul earned EGOT status with their win for penning a song to a musical episode of “Only Murders in the Building.” Other Main Stem talent also took home trophies that night.
